Dr. Dave, if this is in the wrong place just move it! Cheesy
I need help finding a turntable.
I plan to use it with Ref 1's (soon to be Ninja'd) and a Gizmo.  Don't want to break the bank but I really love the Ref's and want to be able to bring my vinyl out of mothballs.  Does anyone have any experience with a good turntable? Huh

I'll add a little more to my response over at TCA - I think Music Hall and Pro-Ject are the value leaders especially if you're trying to keep it around $500, so even though I have the Music Hall MMF-5, I think if I were making the purchase today I'd probably get a Pro-Ject Debut III USB which is an all-in-one solution. This is a Debut with a built in phono preamp stage (which you'll need to connect to the Gizmo's line in). It also has a USB out, so you can digitize you LP's to a computer. If you get a standard TT remember that you'll need to buy a separate phono preamp to be able to hook the TT to the Gizmo.

Music Direct is also having a contest for a Pro-Ject TT if you sign up for their newsletter:

I have a lot of old vinyl I hadn't listened to in years, and having access to them again was like reconnecting with old friends.

The Rega P1 (also at www.musicdirect.com and www.audioadvisor.com) for $395 is also highly recommended.

"The Rega P1 marks the first time a designer whose work ranks with the very best has created an audio component this affordable. And by affordable I mean affordable as in cheap, as in sane, as in reachable by anyone with a job! Kudos to Roy Gandy for his intenuity in doing so.... A high quality, very high value product." -- Art Dudly, Stereophile, May 2007

I was very fortunate to buy a vintage Thorens tunrtable from a member of the AV123 forum in the Classifieds. I also found an excellent condition Kenwoods top-of-the-line turntable one day at Goodwill. And I've seen them in windows at some of the nicer pawnshops while shopping downtown Spokane. ("Nice pawnshop" Is that an oxymoron?)

I'd also like to suggest that you check out some of the vintage radio shops online. While the specialize in the beautiful old radios, sometimes they have other vintage items for sale, too. For example, I wanted a vintage FM tuner. Tuners are like cars, some years are good, some are not so good... some are  great. Unfortunately, everyone knows which FM tuners... the brands, the years, the model numbers... are "to die for" and they are gobbled up real fast. Well, one day I was looking at vintage radios. I've thought about starting to collect a few, you know, the old cathedral radios and floor standing radios that Grandma used to have with such beautiful real wood veneers. I read that I could build a low cost (under $100 AM transmitter -- not FM like you find at www.ccrane.com -- because the old radios were AM. Anyway, you can hook one of these AM transmitters to your stereo like any other component and "broadcast" the music from your stereo to any room in the house... to the vintage AM radio -- most of which are tubed and if they've been reconditioned by a reputable repair shop... sound great. So... to make a short story longer yet... while browsing in a radio only shop I scrolled down and found he had a vintage FM tube tuner that he had completely gone through, replaced the tubes, the caps, the lights, tightened the string, etc. Like new... $200. From time to time I see turntables to. Try this vintage equipment repair shop and leave an email or call him and ask if he has any turntables www.circlestereo.com and if not ask if he can suggest another shop that may have one.

Finally, here's a place I look regularly and I know that he has several really nice reconditioned vintage turntables for sale at great prices. www.oaktreeent.com
